CN Tower

CN TOWER

The CN Tower is a 553.33 meter tower located in the center of Toronto, Canada, which has become the emblem of this city. It is sometimes called the National Tower of Canada because the Canadian National (CN) railway company owned the tower. For 34 years, the CN Tower was the tallest in the world before being overtaken in 2009 by the Burj Khalifa and the Guangzhou Tourism and Television Tower. It remains to this day the tallest tower in the western hemisphere.

USES

The CN Tower has been and continues to be used as a communications tower for a number of different media, and by numerous companies.

RECORDS

The CN Tower is the fifth tallest building in the world. Indeed, in first position is the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai, 828 meters high. The second tower is in Tokyo, the Tokyo Skytree, 634 meters high. Next is the Abraj Al Bait Towers. This structure measures 601 meters and is located in Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Fourth place goes to Canton Tower located 600 meters above sea level in China, in Guangzhou (Guangdong). The CN Tower is also the second tallest freestanding tower in the world behind Burj Khalifa.

By Night

The CN Tower is illuminated at dusk, that is, in the evening and throughout the night. The initial lighting of the tower, consisting of incandescent lamps, was entirely replaced in 1997 by a set of light-emitting diodes (LED) with low consumption. This new principle, made up of 1,330 LEDs capable of producing 16 million colours, offers a greater variety of lighting for the tower: the lighting of each of the LEDs can be individually controlled by a central computer. Thus, the lighting changes according to the seasons and events, the standard colors programmed being red and white, colors of the Canadian flag; for example, the tower is lit up in the colors of the rainbow flag during Gay Pride week at the end of June, while it is lit up orange during Halloween festivities at the end of the month of October. On the first day of winter, it is illuminated in white and blue and during New Year's Eve, special lighting is programmed. During the migration season, from September 22 to October 30, the tower is partly extinguished and the intensity of the lighting is reduced, so as not to disturb the birds.
