Lake Abraham

Lake Abraham

Artificial, was created in 1972 on the Saskatchewan River in western Alberta, in response to the establishment of a dam. Covering an area of 53.7 km², it extends over 32 km in the Canadian Rockies. Its turquoise blue color comes from rock particles generated by the surrounding glaciers. But that's not its most impressive feature.

Every winter, when the temperatures become negative, Lake Abraham is adorned with a layer of ice. When the thermometer turns around -30°C, splendid columns of frozen bubbles take place under the surface. These bubbles are filled with methane, a gas resulting from the decomposition of plants and animals lying at the bottom of the lake. Throughout the year, methane escapes from these waters. But, in winter, the frozen surface prevents it, allowing a magical landscape.
